How Did Your Homes Screening Fare This Past Hurricane Season?

If you are like the majority of the homeowners in Florida the answer is that during Irma or one of the other storms we weathered your screens were ripped, torn, shredded or when you came out when the calm finally arrived, maybe your screens were altogether gone.

Traditional metal mesh screening cannot stand up to the weather, especially hurricane-force winds that whip branches and other debris into them. The metal mesh bends and eventually rips giving way.

Before the next hurricane season hits it’s a great idea to get your home prepared the right way.

The initial investment can potentially save you time, aggravation and money down the road should another storm hit.. and let’s face it, this is Florida. At some point or another, we will experience tropical storm force winds if not a full-blown hurricane.

Being prepared is key. The answer comes in the form of electric screens. These are screens that can be easily retracted during storms. These screens are not only custom designed to fit nearly any opening in your home – lanais, windows, garage doors – but they are also virtually indestructible.

East Coast Electric Screenings utilizes our very own SuperScreen technology, producing screens that are puncture resistant, mildew resistant, and fire retardant. SuperScreen out lives typical fiberglass screening, and come with a ten-year warranty.

East Coast Electric Screening is the leading electric screen company on the east coast of Florida, offering flexible and affordable plans to make sure your home is comfortable and protected year-round.

Keeping your home safer with motorized screening

safer

In an ideal society, you could simply leave your windows open all night and your doors unlocked. These days that just isn’t the state of the world.  Crime is a fact of life here in Florida no matter how nice of a neighborhood you live in. Feeling safe in your own home is a must. So long as proper precautions are taken, you can limit your vulnerability. Locking the doors at night and when you go out, installing alarm systems should an attempted break-in in occur, and getting to know your neighbors – even forming a neighborhood watch group can help add to the feeling of security for all.

Adding motorized SuperScreen to your home can allow you to keep the airflow without sacrificing security. Superscreen is tear resistant and would be very cumbersome for a burglar or home invader to cut through to gain entry. It is opened by installed indoor push button or remote control and can not be opened from the outside.

Normally leaving your drapes open and windows up would allow outsiders to see in your home, especially at night when the lights are on and it is dark out.  SuperScreening, though perfectly visible from the inside out, can be tinted making it tough to peep at the residents inside. This makes your home less of a potential target for would-be criminals.

Electric window screens offer privacy and are a great way to keep bugs and burglars out while still letting the breeze flow in.

At East Coast Electric Screening, LLC, we serve Southwest Florida including Palm Beach, Martin, St. Lucie and Indian River Counties. Give us a call today at (561)-746-2622.

Never bother with regular old screen again!

It’s Florida. Those that move here do it partly for the beautiful sunny weather, same for those who choose to stay. Being able to enjoy nature is part of the beauty of being a homeowner here. That means appreciation for the indoor-outdoor areas in your space. Lanais, patios, sunrooms and more.

In order to fully enjoy these places, they need to be screened.

Whether you already have a home or are in the designing and building process it is always the right time to consider adding motorized electric screens made of high-tech super screen material.

Old traditional metal mesh screens can tear, snag, rip, bend and need to be repaired and replaced fairly regularly. This is especially true if you have pets. Paws and claws can ruin a traditional screen in no time flat. SuperScreen, being snag resistant is also pet resistant. Over time they may rust, mold, mildew, even become lose or have bubbles in them, they begin to look worn aging the impression of the home itself.

Choosing to work with East Coast Electrical Screening allows screens to be installed that will not only stand the test of time with a limited ten-year warranty on these puncture resistant, fire retardant, mildew resistant screens that are custom fit and even recessed as they retract right into a slim housing of extruded aluminum. This unique housing allows screens to remain undamaged even in the strongest winds, which in Florida during tropical depressions or hurricanes can save you a small fortune in replacement costs or insurance claims.

Superscreens can be fitted to garage doors, French doors, windows, patios, lanais, Roman archways, even doggie doors! Super Screen: Why We Love Them

Super Screen™ is a brand of screening here at East Coast Electric Screening, we just LOVE! We have been in the screening business for many, many years and have yet to come across a type of screening that is better than this product. We encourage our customers to consider Super Screen™ screening for the following reasons:

  • Super Screen™ is very durable. Older screening was made of fiberglass. That type would lose its elasticity over time. Over the course of a 7-year test, Super Screen only lost 1% of its strength. The test exposed it to sunlight and weather conditions.
  • Pet owners should invest in this type of screening. Pets can wreak havoc on screens when they see another dog walking by or want to get out to chase a squirrel, etc. Super Screen™ makes claw marks from pets barely even visible. This reduces the number of times that you will need to replace your screens due to scratches.
  • Believe it or not, these screens are tear-proof and puncture-proof. The strands are extra strong, yet still very lightweight. The company that makes Super Screen™ has a special technology that makes their screens very strong.
  • In Florida, mold and mildew abound due to the humidity levels. These organisms readily attach to screening around lanais and pool cages. The fabric used in Super Screen resists mildew, which is sought after by homeowners.
  • The sun here in Florida can be extreme. Super Screen™ is fade resistant. They are manufactured with a UV protectant, which keeps your screens looking new year after year.
  • The small hold sizes available help keep out even the tiniest of bugs. You can enjoy your lanai or pool area without the need for bug repellant. The sizes offered can be so small that it can even block up to 50% of the sun’s rays.

This amazing screening even comes with a 10-year limited warranty. That is unheard of in the screening industry. Trust us, we know! Motorized Electric Screens Are Perfect for Cooler Months

The hot, muggy summer months are almost behind us. At times now, you can even feel a touch of coolness in the air. Now that it is October, we have the winter months to look forward to in Florida. The winter season is a beautiful time of the year down here and many people like to enjoy the cooler weather on their lanais. Our motorized electric screens make it easy to transition from an open area to an enclosed, more private area for you and your family to enjoy.

With the cooler months coming, you might want to take some time to inspect your current screens. If they need cleaning or repair, now is the time to do it. If they need replacing, then we highly recommend motorized electric screens. Not only will they be easier to raise and lower, but your friends, family, and neighbors will think highly of the technology. We can’t tell you how many compliments that we get on our own motorized screens in our own homes as well as our customer’s homes.

With the Zika virus spreading through the south Florida area right now, having some type of screening in place is crucial to avoid mosquito bites. Our Super Screen product is tough, won’t tear, and will keep little pesky biting and stinking bugs out of your living spaces.

You may decide, like a lot of Floridians, that once the weather cools a bit to turn off the air conditioner and open up the doors and windows to “air out” the house. It is always a nice option to be able to let fresh air into the home. The cross ventilation moves stale air from the summer out and cleans fresh air inside your home. Having motorized electric screens in place is ideal to fully enjoy your winter months. Call us today to schedule a consultation and learn more about the high-quality screening that we offer.

The History of Screens

Isn’t it nice that we can sit in our screened in porch and enjoy a cup of coffee during the morning without bees, wasps and critters bothering us? Screens are an unsung hero. To those reading this, we’ve always had them, so we don’t appreciate them as much as we should. It wasn’t too long ago that windows and doors didn’t have screening on them. The windows were either open or closed, which affected the view, ventilation, and the lack of insect, animal, and debris control.

The first wire screens were recorded in 1825 as “woven wire” screens. From that point on, “woven wire window” screens caught on. In the 1840’s Gilbert and Bennett Manufacturing invented wire mesh window screens. The first patent for screens was in 1868 by Bayley and McCluskey to be used on railcars to provide ventilation while protecting passengers from the dust and sparks of the running train. Window screens then evolved into preventing insects from entering residential homes through windows, which, over time, reduced the number of parasitic diseases in the United States. Most operable windows in the USA and Canada have window screens on them nowadays.

It has been less than 100 years since the window screen came into existence. Since then, we have SuperScreens which prevent tearing, punctures and mildew growth. We also have screens that provide UV protection, screens that display an image like a painting, bug free screens that keep out even the teeny tiny No-see-ums, and motorized screens. Our porches and lanai’s have screening so sunny days can be enjoyed without animals and insects invading our space. It also helps to keep children and pets inside the enclosed space, providing a safety feature. Our doors have screens on them now too. Front doors, back doors, sliding glass doors and even garage doors all are now available with various types of screens.

Spring Clean Your Window Screens

It’s that time of year again! Now that warmer weather is here, we are all on the spring cleaning war path! It is a great time to focus on your window and door screens. Let’s get them all scrubbed up and clean for the upcoming summer season.

  1. You will want to remove the screen from the frame. Carefully lie the screen down on a large blanket or towel that you don’t mind getting dirty.
  1. Using the extension attachments, run a vacuum over the screen to rid it of dust and loose dirt.
  1. Fill a bucket with a quarter of a cup of all-purpose soap and about a half-gallon of warm water.
  1. Standing the screen up, you may need someone to help you with this, wash both sides with the soap mixture.
  1. Spray the screen off with a hose. Make sure that it is on a low pressure setting. High power settings might make tear the screen away from the spline and create a saggy, loose screen that needs repaired.
  1. Dry your screens with a clean, dry towel and then set them out to air dry.
  1. Once the screens are dry, you can replace them into the frame.
  1. As you are cleaning each screen, inspect each one for tears, holes and check to see if it has come loose from the frame. Insects, pollen and debris can enter your home through these unsightly tears.

Maintaining the integrity of the screen is important to its lifespan. By occasionally taking a vacuum attachment and getting the dirt and gunk off, then your next spring cleaning will be simple.

*Note: while your screens are off of the windows, that is a great time to wash the outside of the windows as well!

East Coast Electric Screening is the expert and go-to for screen replacement. Their SuperScreens are amazing and have a long lifespan. They are tear resistant, mildew resistant, fire retardant, and puncture resistant. All of which bode well here in Florida.
