What are Motorized Electric Screens?

Motorized electric screens are exactly what they sound like. They are screens that are installed on your home that open up electronically. There is no need to manually pull them down or try to push them up into their housing. With the touch of a button, you are able to either open or shut the screening.

Why use motorized electric screens? Here in Florida, there are many nights, especially in the winter, that you can sit on your back porch and enjoy the cool breezes. By having a screen in place, you can enjoy it without bugs pestering you. When you have the screening down, it will keep debris from trees and bushes from blowing into your sitting area. Motorized screens are great for those who have pets as well. It is a way to contain them during those times that you do not want them running free in the back yard. If you like to host gatherings, the screening easily can be drawn down so that any food buffet is not touched by pests.

Are motorized electric screens bulky and an eye sore? No, absolutely not. This type of screening conveniently rolls up into a discreet housing unit that is custom fitted to blend into your home as much as possible. There are even different colors for the housing unit that can blend to your home’s exterior color.

I like the technology of the Super Screen. Can that be used in a motorized electric screening application? Yes, definitely. The Super Screen is a very popular type of screen that has an amazing warranty due to its resistance to tearing and puncturing. This is a perfect screen for those who own animals or are concerned about the high winds during Florida’s many storms.

Spring Clean Your Window Screens

It’s that time of year again! Now that warmer weather is here, we are all on the spring cleaning war path! It is a great time to focus on your window and door screens. Let’s get them all scrubbed up and clean for the upcoming summer season.

  1. You will want to remove the screen from the frame. Carefully lie the screen down on a large blanket or towel that you don’t mind getting dirty.
  1. Using the extension attachments, run a vacuum over the screen to rid it of dust and loose dirt.
  1. Fill a bucket with a quarter of a cup of all-purpose soap and about a half-gallon of warm water.
  1. Standing the screen up, you may need someone to help you with this, wash both sides with the soap mixture.
  1. Spray the screen off with a hose. Make sure that it is on a low pressure setting. High power settings might make tear the screen away from the spline and create a saggy, loose screen that needs repaired.
  1. Dry your screens with a clean, dry towel and then set them out to air dry.
  1. Once the screens are dry, you can replace them into the frame.
  1. As you are cleaning each screen, inspect each one for tears, holes and check to see if it has come loose from the frame. Insects, pollen and debris can enter your home through these unsightly tears.

Maintaining the integrity of the screen is important to its lifespan. By occasionally taking a vacuum attachment and getting the dirt and gunk off, then your next spring cleaning will be simple.

*Note: while your screens are off of the windows, that is a great time to wash the outside of the windows as well!

East Coast Electric Screening is the expert and go-to for screen replacement. Their SuperScreens are amazing and have a long lifespan. They are tear resistant, mildew resistant, fire retardant, and puncture resistant. All of which bode well here in Florida.

Super Screen vs. Regular Screen

With updated modernized architecture in Florida homes, air flow has been a big consideration.  Windows have gotten bigger, multiple tier sliding glass doors have often been installed, large lanai and patio areas included, Roman arches span upwards making areas feel larger, and double French doors open wide breaking up the space and letting fresh air in.

Up until recently traditional mesh screens comprised of metal wire, fiberglass or other synthetic fibers stretched inside of a wooden or metal frame were the only choice to cover these areas if the home owner wanted to be able to open the house up, especially during buggy seasons.

They do a great job, the problem becomes that over time the screen can get stretched, frayed, pulled, snagged,  may have small holes in it or even rip. At that point they then need to be patched, replaced entirely or rescreened which requires measuring, cutting, a special hand tool and rubberized splining. This replacement technique looks easier than it actually is and can take some time and patience if you opt to do it yourself.

If you choose aluminum or fiberglass screens the biggest issue is that the crimp along the splined edge doesn’t hold because the screen itself is too flexible, which leaves you with lose fitting screens which look sloppy and unprofessional. Galvanized steel is a better choice, giving you a tight fit, but it will still succumb to the elements over time giving your home a more weathered aged look.

The best choice is to update your living space with the addition of SuperScreen. SuperScreen fabric has an extrusion-coated polyester core yarn, which results in vastly superior strength that is 300% stronger than other screen types and extends the life of the product.

Benefits: Superscreen is unlike anything that has previously been on the market.

  1. Homeowners who were finding it necessary to replace their screens every 3-5 years no longer have to do so
  2. Tighter weave, keeping even the tiniest of bugs out
  3. The tensile strength and wind resistance is perfect for use here in Florida as windblown debris just bounces off rather than causing damage
  4. Pets who scratch at the door to go out no longer snag and tear the screen
  5. Mildew resistant so there is never a need to bleach
  6. UV fade resistant
  7. Fire retardant

Are Your Screens Safe This Hurricane Season?

Hurricane season is currently upon us, and many Floridians have already taken action in preventing their homes from acquiring damage. And while screens provide us with shade and element protection during the busy hurricane off-season months, these protective screens are often the first thing that gets damaged when a hurricane actually hits. Modern construction allows most homes to go relatively unscathed, but many residents return to their homes after a hurricane only to find that the screen over their lanai is completely gone or the screen over their pool is so damaged that it must be replaced – usually quite expensively.

The solution comes in the form of electric screens, screens that can easily be retracted when not in use or during storms, and let back down just as easily. East Coast Electric Screening is the leading electric screen company on the east coast of Florida, offering flexible and affordable plans to make sure your home is comfortable and protected year-round. Our screens are not only custom designed to fit nearly any opening in your home – lanais, windows, garage doors – but they are also virtually indestructible.

East Coast Electric Screenings utilizes our very own SuperScreen technology, producing screens that are mildew resistant, puncture resistant, and fire retardant. SuperScreen outlasts typical fiberglass screens, and, because we are so confident in the reliability of our screens, we even offer a Ten Year Limited Warranty on every screen we install. Our contractors will always work along with our customer’s desires and expectations, insuring that every customer ends up happy and with a product that they love.

Most people come to Florida to enjoy the beautiful weather year-round, and motorized electric screens can provide your family with the tools it needs to truly enjoy the Florida atmosphere. Whether your electric screen is used during the day to keep children and pets from wandering away, or at night to allow a cool and refreshing breeze to run through the house while preventing pesky insects from entering along with it, the flexibility your screen provides can cater to any situation.

Call East Coast Electric Screening today at 1-888-41SCREEN, and make sure your home is not only ready for hurricane season, but ready for entertaining and enjoy the Florida lifestyle with your friends and family, every day of the year.
